When machines talk: Globe Business M2M technology makes business better

Running a
small or medium-sized business can be challenging: besides the problems faced
at the workplace and daily operations, entrepreneurs must also take care of
their office premises, vehicles, machinery and other fixed assets. The
question, for many SMBs, is how to find solutions that are effective yet also
affordable.

“SMBs face
many problems similar to those of larger corporations but they don’t have a lot
of resources to solve such problems. What Globe Business does is provide SMBs
with affordable, reliable, and effective solutions using what’s called ‘M2M’ or
machine-to-machine technology.

“Essentially,
M2M technology allows machines to “talk” to each other and communicate through
Globe Business’ M2M Network. This technology has many applications and uses
that provide advantages and benefits to SMBs,” said Manny Escosa, Globe
Business Small and Medium Business Marketing Head.

There are two
main categories of Globe Business M2M Solutions currently available: Globe
Business M2M Fixed Assets Management (M2M-FAM) and Globe Business Fleet
Management Service (M2M-FMS).

Fixed
Assets Management

For the
following SMB needs listed below, there’s a corresponding Globe Business M2M
Solution that addresses them.

Need:
Security and maintenance of remote assets.
SMBs that
have remote assets like vendo machines and refrigeration units need to
regularly assess the status of those machines and conduct maintenance or repair
work.

Solution:
Use
Globe Business M2M Fixed Assets
Management (M2M-FAM)
to assess the status of remote assets and machines,
including ATMs, vendo machines, refrigeration units and the like.

Once M2M-FAM
determines that these remote assets are in need of maintenance or repair, it
sends an alert to the business owner. The business owner can then send in a
team to fix the machine.

There’s no
need to physically send personnel to check on each individual machine from time
to time, once the machines are already being monitored  through the Globe Business M2M network.

Instead, each
machine itself communicates through the M2M network when it needs maintenance
or repair. This allows the business owner to send in a repair team at the most
appropriate time. This saves the business owner time, effort and money.

Need:
Monitor the unauthorized use of computer servers
. Unauthorized
use of company computers not only adds to the wear and tear on equipment and
increase power consumption but, more seriously, compromises confidential
company data.

Solution:  Use Globe
Business M2M-FAM
to monitor track the utilization of company CPUs. Usually,
a company would know the usual level of CPU activity in their servers. A
higher-than-normal CPU activity may indicate unauthorized use of a company
computer and Globe Business M2M-FAM can send an alert to the business owner (or
a designated manager or staff) if this happens.

Need:
Track and send alert when factory equipment is being used illicitly.
Owners of factories need to ensure that their
machinery is used only during designated hours to produce a pre-determined
output. Illicit use puts wear and tear on machinery, increases power
consumption, and also indicates that factory products are being manufactured
illegally.

Solution:
Use Globe Business M2M-FAM to alert
owner when illicit use of factory machinery is detected. In this way, the
factory owner will be able to implement measures to stop the illegal use of
equipment and hold those behind it accountable.

Fleet
Management Service

Globe Business also offers M2M solutions for an SMB’s
vehicles. The Globe Business M2M Fleet Management Service (M2M-FMS) offers
several benefits and advantages to a company’s mobile assets. It uses GPS
technology along with the Globe Business M2M network to keep track of a company
vehicle’s location.

Need: Ensure on-time
deliveries of goods.
An
SMB needs to make sure that its deliveries arrive at the correct destination on
schedule. Delays could mean lost business.

Solution: Use Globe
Business M2M-FMS
to track the location of company
vehicles while they are on the move. Using an office computer linked to the
Globe Business M2M network, the business owner or a designated manager or staff
can determine if a company vehicle arrived at its destination on-time.

Globe Business
M2M-FMS can also assess the best travel route a company vehicle can take, based
on historic performance for efficiency. Or allow a vehicle to find an
alternative route in cases of heavy traffic or obstructions.

Need: Assure the proper
refrigeration of perishable goods being delivered.
SMBs that transport perishable goods need to maintain
a proper temperature inside their delivery vans or trucks to avoid spoilage.

Solution: Keep track of the temperature inside the
refrigerated compartments using Globe
Business M2M-FMS
. Through the M2M network, a business owner will be alerted
in case of a malfunction in the temperature control. This quick, real-time
alert allows the business owner to tell the driver to stop the vehicle and
check the refrigeration compartment—so that a timely response can be made to make
repairs.

Need: Alerts
in cases of theft, pilferage, or hijacking of company vehicles.
While it is difficult to actually prevent
theft, pilferage, or hijacking, a business owner can make a more appropriate
and more timely response in such situations if he or she is alerted as soon as
possible when these occur.

Solution: Use Globe
Business M2M-FMS
to assess and co-relate vehicle performance and driver
behavior based on vehicle status, speed, etc. By analyzing these factors,
business owners can be alerted to a suspicious situation.

For example, Globe Business M2M-FMS can track if a
company vehicle is moving too slow, has made an unauthorized stop, or has
deviated from its predetermined route.

In cases where there is unauthorized opening of a
vehicle’s cargo hold, or if an accident occurs, Globe Business M2M-FMS can
trigger and broadcast a security alert to the owner. The owner can then inform
authorities to respond.

Security
and surveillance

Globe Business
M2M Solutions also have applications related to security and surveillance. Globe Business M2M Security and
Surveillance
enhances a company’s existing security system.

It can assist
company/user to determine thru the M2M alerts if there are attempts to tamper,
sabotage or steal a company’s fixed assets. M2M security and
surveillance devices use accessories such as motion and door sensors, panic
buttons this may also be linked to Globe Business M2M Managed Services.

The Globe
Business M2M Security and Surveillance system serves as a deterrent: the
security devices are always ready to activate alarms and trigger an emergency
response.

In summary:
Globe Business' M2M Solutions optimize the functionality and productivity of a
company's machines/assets. They make business operations less costly yet more
efficient. They also provide greater security and control over a company's
mobile and fixed assets.

Globe Business
M2M Solutions are ideal for a wide range of businesses—including the food
and/or service industries (restaurants, resorts, hotels, etc.); financial
enterprises (banks, pawnshops, etc.); manufacturing, distribution; practically
any business that benefits from machine-to-machine networking and pro-active
security.

“Globe
Business M2M Solutions can be used in a variety of applications to fit the
needs of every type of business—especially small and medium businesses (SMBs)
that are seeking quality and reliability at a more affordable cost. SMB owners
are welcome to come to us and discuss how we could customize a package of
solutions to meet their needs,” said Escosa.

Fighting colds mean being free from dust mites

We all know that the common cold, a viral infectious disease of the respiratory tract, is one of the human body’s most familiar and regular ailments. Different people have very similar symptoms like coughing, sore throat, runny nose or fever, but many suffer for variable periods of time, from as short as 3 days to as long as 3 weeks or even more, depending on the body’s immune system reacts to the infection.

However, despite advancements in medical technology and improvements in medicine formulation, cure for the common cold remains elusive but definitely, the symptoms can be treated or even prevented.

But did you know that the cold you are having right now may not be because of a viral infection but an allergic reaction? Despite displaying similar symptoms to a virus-based cold like itchy nose, runny nose or cough, the cold you are having right now may be because of allergic reaction to microorganisms such as “dust mites.” These “critters” leave behind waste matter on our bed, pillows, blankets and other beddings, curtains, sofas and other foam-based material, which may be the culprit to our cold.

How do these dust mites bring us the dreaded cold?

Well, it is also part of our own doing. Our own skin, and most especially food bits that drop on our beds or sofas whenever we feel having breakfast in bed or eating while on a DVD marathon, are consumed by dust mites and results to their waste droppings. Not meaning to scare you, but did you know that a 10-year-old mattress contains millions and millions of dust mites?

So how do you contain dust mites? Vacuuming may be a solution but the problem is it only removes surface dust, not dust mites because they have several powerful legs that cling to the fabric. And even if the vacuum removes the dust mites, they will still return and continue to wreak havoc on the household, especially children who have weaker immune systems.

Now, the most effective way to get rid of dust mites is to kill them using “C” ultra-violet light—deadly against dust mites yet less harmful to humans.

Luckily, there is now a UVC-based device that will consistently and effectively kill dust mites—the Raycop UVC Anti-Allergy Cleaner.

The Raycop UVC Anti-Allergy Cleaner can effectively eliminate 99% of bacteria and almost 94% of dust mites, and can also help deactivate the dangerous H1N1 Influenza A virus. This was based on studies conducted by the Tokyo Allergy Research Center and the Japan Food Research Laboratories.

Raycop’s process to eliminate dust mites and even other allergens is via its patented 3-step allergy care system: vibrating, sterilizing and double-filtering. It has a Vibrating Pad that that vibrates a whopping 3,600 times per minute, and shakes particles and dust mites away from mattresses, pillows and other fabrics and linens to make sure that even the most stubborn dust mites are removed.

The UVC Sterilization lamp, meanwhile, kills bacteria to leave surfaces germ-free. Using lamp technology from Philips and Sankyo, it uses a lamp with a highly efficient and effective 253.7 nanometer wavelength, the same germicidal ultraviolet wavelength used in hospitals, clinics and laboratories.

Finally, Raycop uses a cartridge filter that captures the larger particles and traps them so they cannot go back to the room and helps extend the life of the Micro Allergy Filter, which is the one that traps the smaller particles to make sure they do not escape as well.

So better prepare against colds. Try the Raycop UVC Anti-Allergy Cleaner and help protect your household against dust mites, colds and other respiratory problems.

Raycop is available at Rustan’s Department Stores, S & R, Landmark, Wilcon Builder’s Libis and soon at Abensons. For more information about the Raycop product line and its outstanding features, visit www.raycop.com.

Philips ProCare Range: Straighten your hair the safe way

Filipinas have always been fond of straight hair. Advertisements, celebrities and magazine spreads constantly advocate the straight ‘do. Filipinas march into salons which, in turn, offer a whole range of straightening services to cater to the growing demand. They also use straightening irons that, unfortunately, can severely burn their hair.

“Straight hair is a trademark look of many Filipinas. Many go to great lengths to achieve that type of hair. And that’s also become the primary reason for plenty of damaged hair,” explains Ms. Angelia Oh, General Manager for Philips Consumer Lifestyle.

According to Ms. Oh, heavy blow drying, excessive amounts of hair spray and other hair products, as well as constant hair ironing can cause serious damage to the hair. With its hair care expertise for 50 years, Philips has developed a simpler way to straighten and style one’s own hair with less damage.

Safe, accessible hair styling

On its fiftieth year, Philips Hair Care has expanded and improved its range of hair care products with the ProCare Range. According to Ms. Oh, the range includes hair dryers, curlers, straighteners, and stylers. “The philosophy behind the ProCare Range is essentially more style, with less damage,” Ms. Oh explains. “We wanted to make hair styling more accessible to consumers in the comfort of their own home, but more importantly, to produce hair care products that are safe and gentle for hair,” adds Ms. Oh.

The Philips Straightener HP8339 from the ProCare Range not only straightens hair smoothly and efficiently, but also protects hair from overheating with its Dual-Care plates that glide smoothly through the hair. This straightener is safer to use because of its constant temperature and Even Heat Distribution. Constant temperature allows the user to straighten hair at a more caring and manageable temperature, yet still getting the desired style.

On the other hand, Even Heat Distribution prevents damaging hot spots on the plates by evenly distributing heat the entire time, thus maintaining healthier hair. This straightener also offers healthy restyling with auto-settings as well as quick heat up time of 15 seconds. A key lock function also locks in the user’s desired settings.

50 years of hair expertise

In the last 50 years, Philips has been at the forefront of the hair care industry. Since the very first Philips Hairdryer was released in 1962, the world has seen a great number of iconic hair styles that Philips has helped pioneer and made accessible to the average consumer.

“We are proud to have continuously provided diversity and innovation in products that satisfy the needs of our consumers,” Ms. Oh remarks. “It is our commitment to make meaningful innovations that allow consumers to live a more convenient and healthier lifestyle.”

The Philips ProCare range of hair care products are available at all authorized Philips retail establishments.

What you missed on the first two episodes of GMA's "Pahiram ng Sandali"

For those who missed the first two episodes of GMA's newest primetime drama program "Pahiram ng Sandali," it's time to catch up on its exciting story. The series stars Dingdong Dantes (Alex), Max Collins (Cindy), Christopher de Leon (Philip) and Ms. Lorna Tolentino (Janice) with Alessandra de Rossi (Baby), Mark Gil (Larry), Sandy Andolong (Thea), Neil Ryan Sese (Andrew), Isabel Rivas (Diana), Kristofer Martin (Franz), among others.

Here's a summary of the said episodes:

The story began with a scene in the middle of a hostage crisis. An exasperated bolo-wielding man threatens to end the life of an elderly woman whom he held hostage out of despair over his marital problems.

Meanwhile, an aspiring journalist named Alex Santiago (Dingdong Dantes) applies as an intern under the tutelage of Romer Alcaraz (Roy Alvarez), a veteran hard news reporter and columnist of the tabloid, "Pinoy Reporter."

As a test, Romer Alcaraz challenges Alex and three other aspirants for the job to go and cover the on-going hostage crisis and come up with a plausible news story. Whoever gets the best angle to the story gets the job.

Alex accepted the challenge but as soon as he returns to where he had parked his motorcycle, a woman hurried away with it. He would later learn that the woman's name is Cindy and that she had escaped from her boyfriend who attempted to take advantage of her.

Even without his motorcycle, Alex still managed to reach the site of the hostage-taking. In his attempt to get the best viewpoint of the scene, he climbed up the roof of the house where the hostage taker and his hostage were and took a snapshot using his mobile phone through a hole in the roof. But the structure wasn't strong enough to support his weight and so it caved in and ultimately Alex came crashing down to the floor. He fought with the infuriated hostage taker, and just as he thought he had knocked him down, he received a heavy blow on to his head from the hostage who owned the house. In the end, Alex lost his motorcycle, then his consicousness and, finally, his bid for the job.

Flashback to Alex's childhood. Alex is an illigitimate child; He grew up not knowing who his real father is, and so he was always a favorite victim of bullies at school. He was called by his classmates "putok sa buho" which is a derogatory phrase used to mock children who were born out of wedlock.

No longer able to withstand the bullying, Alex engaged in a fistfight with his classmates. The incident dismayed Alex's mom, Thea (Sandy Andolong). Alex demanded that his mom tell him who his father is. In the end, Thea was left without a choice but to tell him the whole truth: that Alex's father is Larry Gomez (Mark Gil), the managing editor of "The Philippine Examiner," considered the most respected and most influential newspaper in the country.

Thea attempted to introduce Alex to his father but when she brought the boy to him, Larry drove them away. He even offered them money and when a coin dropped to the ground, he told the boy he could take it as well. Since then, Alex developed deep hatred against his father. It worsened when Alex saw how much Larry loved JR, his son with Diana Gomez (Isabel Rivas), the woman who was instrumental in catapulting Larry to his present stature.

Back to present time, Thea married her suitor Berting who turned out to be a batterer. One day, Berting beat Thea so badly that she had to be rushed to the hospital because of an injury to her spleen. She needs to undergo a major treatment but she has no financial means to do so.

Meanwhile, Alex found out that a photo of him taken during the hostage taking incident was published in Romer's column. Infuriated, he stormed the columnist in his office. On his way out of the building, he saw Cindy as the latter was returning his motorcycle. He confronted Cindy for stealing his motorcycle. Alex left hugely disappointed and accidentally drops the tabloid he was holding. Cindy picks it up and reads about the man's misfortunes. She felt guilty for what she did and began to feel pity for him.

GMA Network hosts 'digital' trade launch

GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) embraces transmedia as the country’s leading multi-media company hosted its first digital trade launch on November 28 in Makati City.

Spearheaded by the Network’s marketing subsidiary GMA Marketing and Productions, Inc. (GMPI), the event incorporated several digital elements in presenting new advertising platforms to members of the trade. The trade launch also allowed guests to experience various Kapuso programs “the digital way.”

From the paper-less registration to the augmented reality wall that greeted attendees upon entrance, the Kapuso event showed clear indications that GMA is fully adopting new technology.

“We recognize that transmedia is key in today’s media industry. The focus has shifted from simply attracting more viewers to actually engaging them to play a more active role in many aspects of programming,” said GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon on the future of television.

“Hence, as we continue to strive in keeping our status of being the country’s nationwide ratings leader and the preferred network of our valued partners in the trade, we are also faced with the challenge of becoming more relevant in today’s fast-changing media landscape,” Gozon added.

During the trade event, several interactive booths were put up to further showcase GMA’s offerings for the first quarter of 2013 including its coverage of the forthcoming election period for which GMA has allotted a significant amount. Dubbed "Eleksyon 2013," the coverage is set to be the biggest, widest and most comprehensive election coverage on TV.

“Digital technology has changed the way viewers consume media,” said GMPI President and COO Lizelle G. Maralag.

“This 2013, we are all about charting new grounds as we introduce new and innovative ways to deliver the desired results of our advertisers, from the digital to classical media platforms,” she added.

GMA introduced mobile applications that allow users to scan actual items, images or codes to gain access to a variety of content from its popular TV Shows. These applications also serve as venues for advertisers to have their own promotional activities for their products.

However, despite the changes in the way viewers behave, GMA maintains that content still is and will always be the primary driver when it comes to viewership. “Keeping this in mind, GMA Network will continue to provide quality programs that will cater to the changing needs and preferences of viewers,” said Gozon.

GMA’s top management led by Gozon, GMA President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit Jr., GMA EVP and CFO Felipe S. Yalong, and Maralag, along with the Network’s pool of stars and news and public affairs personalities graced the said occasion. (30)

Highlights of FLG's interview
FLG said that next year’s CAPEX/OPEX will most likely be similar to this year’s, which is at about P970 million.

He said that the biggest project for next year is GMA’s coverage of the 2013 elections.

The Network has allotted more than 100 million pesos for the acquisition of new technology for the coverage.

Meanwhile, FLG said that GMA might not be able to meet the P2.8 billion target that was set this 2012 due to increases in the company's OPEX including the payout of several bonuses. In Q4 2012 alone, employees of GMA will receive two bonuses (November and December) from the Network.

For next year, the target full year income will be much greater given that the following year is an election year. He said that he expects a double-digit growth in earnings in 2012.

Still on the elections, FLG said that TV remains to be the most ubiquitous medium of communication.

He added that GMA will continue to be cost-efficient in that it will not incur unnecessary costs.

Pepito wants a vintage car this Christmas

For avid followers of the comedy sitcom Pepito Manaloto, here is an insider scoop on what will happen on the show this Sunday, December 2.

Pepito's household is frequented by a group of carolers who disguise themselves as philantropers caroling for a cause.  But as what they will soon discover, the group is a hoax.

Meanwhile, Pepito has a wish this Christmas: he wants to buy himself a vintage car as a gift. Unfortunately, his wife Elsa is not sold on the idea.  She reasons that there is no need for such car and that there is no more space left in their garage. Consequently, Pepito gets disappointed with Elsa. In the end, Elsa yields to Pepito's wish but Pepito later learns that the car brings with it some "bad luck."  What will he do with it now?

Finally, Pepito and Elsa's daughter Clarissa returns home from school sick and very weak. Expectedly, her parents are worried that her illness might be more than just an ordinary fever.  What could it be?

Find out the answers this Sunday on Pepito Manaloto starring Michael V., Manilyn Reynes, Jake Vargas, Angel Satsumi, among others. It airs after 24 Oras Weekend on GMA-7.

TV5 International continues expansion with Canada launch

TV5 International continues to expand with the recent launch of channels Kapatid TV5 and Aksyon TV International in Canada. Held last November 3 during the PNT Singing Idol 2102 Grand Finals in Vancouver, the launch introduced to the public the availability of TV5’s channels through the Turbo TV bar, an IPTV (Internet Protocol Television)-powered device that transforms regular TV into a smart TV.

The Turbo TV bar allows users the flexibility to download and install their favorite Apps from the Google Store. Viewers can enjoy both local Canadian programs and TV5’s news and entertainment shows while having the functions of a desktop computer on their television sets. The Turbo TV Android Set top box also comes with a built-in camera, allowing users to surf the web and connect with their family and friends on Twitter, Facebook, Skype, and Youtube.

“Turbo TV is the first to offer this kind of cutting-edge technology to Filipinos living overseas, combining entertainment with almost everything one wants to do online,” said Claro Carmelo Ramirez, President of PGN, Ltd. “This is truly revolutionary and we are optimistic that our Kapatids in Canada will love this product.”

TV5’s Kapatid TV5 and Aksyon TV International are the only channels from the Philippines offered via the Turbo TV Filipino package, which is powered by Vancouver-based AEBC Internet Corp. and distributed by Reyfort Media Group all over Canada. Plans are also already underway for a bigger launch in the country sometime next year, with hopes to reach more Filipinos living in other key areas in the region.

Jennifer Lopez's Dance Again World Tour Live in Manila | A Night to Remember

I had a chance to watch JLo's Dance Again World Tour last night. Few days ago, I joined PLDT Home's JLo Twitter contest, and I'm one of the five lucky winners to watch the said concert.

From my Instagram account

Thousand of fans trooped in at SM Mall of Asia Arena, as Latina diva visited Manila for the first time as a part of her Dance Again World Tour.

The spectacular night opened up by Philippine All-Stars. Followed by a duet by RnB prince Jay-R and sultry Mica Javier.

When we saw JLo's dancers going up on stage, we knew that it will be an awesome night of our lives. As she sang at least 20 songs from first album to her latest album, “LOVE?, Jennifer Lopez rocks SM MOA Arena!

JLo flaunts her six pack abs and bootylicious bod as she performed her 20 of her greatest hits.

From Phoemela Barranda's Instagram account

One of the highlights of the said concert when she sang an acoustic version of "If You Had My Love", she suddenly pick one of the fans standing near the stage and sang with her.

Also, she shook hands with fans, took her own photo using one of the audience' camera phones, and she raised the Philippine flag draped it around her shoulders.

After the said concert, she went straight to the airport going for Dance Again World Tour leg in Hong Kong, she tweeted:

JLo's concert completed my birthday wish. It's really a night to remember.

Thank you PLDT Home for the two tickets that my sister and I enjoyed the fantabulous night.

PNoy leads storytelling session to Araw ng Pagbasa“Araw ng Pagbasa”

To
stress the importance of reading as the foundation of knowledge, President
Benigno S. Aquino III leads today a storytelling session with Grade V pupils of
T. Alonzo Elementary School in Project 4, Quezon
City
.

Araw
ng Pagbasa is an annual advocacy program that began in 2008. Every year, public
elementary schools and high schools in Quezon
City
simultaneously hold storytelling sessions in
Araling Panlipunan, Filipino, and English.

Araw ng Pagbasa was inspired by the ideals of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy”
Aquino, who deeply believed that reading expands the mind that serves as a
key   to other learning.

To promote a nationwide advocacy for reading, November
was declared the National Reading Month which culminates with the “Araw ng Pagbasa” on November 27,
Ninoy’s birthday.

Education Secretary Armin Luisto said the move is in
support of the ten-point education agenda of the Aquino Administration which
promotes the Every Child a Reader Program (ECARP).

Reading
enriches the mind and opens a host of other possibilities that is why we
encourage our children to start early and keep the habit as they grow older,”
Luistro added.

To highlight the Reading Month, Luistro directed all
regional, division and school level officials to lead the nationwide
synchronized reading program every first Monday of November from 9:00 to 10:00
in the morning.

“By encouraging reading among our school children
using many creative ways,   we are also motivating them to learn from the
lives of eminent Filipinos who can be our role models,” explained Luistro.

School kids learn dengue self-defense in “Green Cross School Crashers”

CHILDREN ARE AT GREATER RISK of dengue infection,
according to the Department of Health. Kids of ages 10 years and below need to
level up their protection against this serious, potentially deadly
disease—whether they are at home or in school.

This is why the Green Cross School Crashers campaign
is a very important frontline effort to defend school children against dengue.
The Green Cross School Crashers team goes to various schools in Metro Manila to
empower school children by teaching them proper habits that will protect them
from dengue lamok or dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

The latest site of the Green Cross School Crashers
campaign is Paco Catholic School, where elementary school kids learned about
the two “school crashers” that they need to watch out for: Daytime Dengue
Lamok, and Nighttime Dengue Lamok.

The Green Cross School Crashers team held
two interactive learning sessions in the campus on November 19th, one for Grade
Four and another for Grade Six students.

Paco Catholic School Director Msgr. Rolando Dela Cruz, is happy that the students displayed much enthusiasm
and learning during their participation in the interactive educational session
held by the Green Cross School Crashers team for the kids.

Though Paco Catholic School has recorded
low dengue cases – 9 out of 2822 grade school students and 7 out of 2689 high
school students – the school is very cooperative and welcomed the Green Cross
School Crashers team.

Double threat

One of the most important things that the Paco Catholic
School
kids learned is
that there are actually two types, or species, of dengue lamok. one species, Aedes aegypti, bites during the day,
while the other species, Aedes albopictus,
bites at night.

For many, many years, people believed that
Ae.aegypti was the only threat.
Recently, however, Filipino entomologists discovered that another dengue lamok,
Ae. albopictus, also threatens kids
and families with dengue during nighttime.

So that kids can easily understand this
new scientific discovery and other concepts about dengue and dengue lamok, they
are taught by the Green Cross Crashers team using games, songs, dances,
story-telling sessions and interaction with the Green Cross Ambassador, Ms.
Green, and the two mascots: Daytime Dengue Lamok and Nighttime Dengue Lamok.

These various activities help kids
understand that the threat of dengue is now double, with dengue lamok biting
during the day and at night. This double threat of dengue is more worrisome
when DOH statistics are considered:

Based on a DOH report, the national dengue
cases from January to September 2012 now reached 95,142.  This figure is 12.94% higher compared to the
same period last year which was 84, 244 cases.
DOH has also detailed that the prime dengue victims are mostly children
under 10 years of age because of their weaker immune systems.

Dengue defense

Ms. Green shared information on what students and
parents can do to prevent dengue lamok from breeding. For example, getting rid
of stagnant water in the house and its surroundings; this is because stagnant
water is a mosquito breeding site.

Ms. Green taught the school kids the special Day and
Night Dengue Lamok Defense stance.   The
stance is similar to a karate block—and while the gesture is symbolic, it
derived its effectiveness from the kids’ natural affinity for movement,
mimicry, and play.

Other preventive measures discussed included: wearing
of long pants and long sleeved shirts; and applying insect repellent lotion to prevent mosquitoes from
landing on and biting the kids’ skin.

Green Cross Insect Repellent Lotion is clinically
proven to protect against Daytime Dengue Lamok and Nighttime Dengue Lamok. It
also provides the  anti-bacterial
protection that the Green Cross brand is known and trusted to provide.

While dengue lamok continue to lurk around us, the Paco Catholic
School
kids now know how
to protect themselves, thanks to Green Cross School Crashers.  Aside from the new learning the students got
from the Green Cross School Crashers, Paco Catholic
School
personnel
regularly do fumigation and clearing of stagnant water within the school’s
surroundings. The school also often coordinates with its barangay for new
health programs and echoes these learnings to its students and teachers.

Other Metro Manila schools that have
already joined the campaign against dengue include St. Scholastica’s College
Manila; St .Scholastica’s College Marikina, St. Pedro Poveda, Manila Cathedral
School, Notre Dame of Greater Manila, St. Mary’s Academy of Caloocan, Diliman
Preparatory School, Sienna College, St. Jude Catholic School, Philippine
Cultural College, Pasig Catholic College, University of Perpetual Help, Lourdes
School of Mandaluyong, Divine Light Academy, Paref Southridge School and MGC
New Life School.
