What you missed on the first two episodes of GMA's "Pahiram ng Sandali"

For those who missed the first two episodes of GMA's newest primetime drama program "Pahiram ng Sandali," it's time to catch up on its exciting story. The series stars Dingdong Dantes (Alex), Max Collins (Cindy), Christopher de Leon (Philip) and Ms. Lorna Tolentino (Janice) with Alessandra de Rossi (Baby), Mark Gil (Larry), Sandy Andolong (Thea), Neil Ryan Sese (Andrew), Isabel Rivas (Diana), Kristofer Martin (Franz), among others.

Here's a summary of the said episodes:

The story began with a scene in the middle of a hostage crisis. An exasperated bolo-wielding man threatens to end the life of an elderly woman whom he held hostage out of despair over his marital problems.

Meanwhile, an aspiring journalist named Alex Santiago (Dingdong Dantes) applies as an intern under the tutelage of Romer Alcaraz (Roy Alvarez), a veteran hard news reporter and columnist of the tabloid, "Pinoy Reporter."

As a test, Romer Alcaraz challenges Alex and three other aspirants for the job to go and cover the on-going hostage crisis and come up with a plausible news story. Whoever gets the best angle to the story gets the job.

Alex accepted the challenge but as soon as he returns to where he had parked his motorcycle, a woman hurried away with it. He would later learn that the woman's name is Cindy and that she had escaped from her boyfriend who attempted to take advantage of her.

Even without his motorcycle, Alex still managed to reach the site of the hostage-taking. In his attempt to get the best viewpoint of the scene, he climbed up the roof of the house where the hostage taker and his hostage were and took a snapshot using his mobile phone through a hole in the roof. But the structure wasn't strong enough to support his weight and so it caved in and ultimately Alex came crashing down to the floor. He fought with the infuriated hostage taker, and just as he thought he had knocked him down, he received a heavy blow on to his head from the hostage who owned the house. In the end, Alex lost his motorcycle, then his consicousness and, finally, his bid for the job.

Flashback to Alex's childhood. Alex is an illigitimate child; He grew up not knowing who his real father is, and so he was always a favorite victim of bullies at school. He was called by his classmates "putok sa buho" which is a derogatory phrase used to mock children who were born out of wedlock.

No longer able to withstand the bullying, Alex engaged in a fistfight with his classmates. The incident dismayed Alex's mom, Thea (Sandy Andolong). Alex demanded that his mom tell him who his father is. In the end, Thea was left without a choice but to tell him the whole truth: that Alex's father is Larry Gomez (Mark Gil), the managing editor of "The Philippine Examiner," considered the most respected and most influential newspaper in the country.

Thea attempted to introduce Alex to his father but when she brought the boy to him, Larry drove them away. He even offered them money and when a coin dropped to the ground, he told the boy he could take it as well. Since then, Alex developed deep hatred against his father. It worsened when Alex saw how much Larry loved JR, his son with Diana Gomez (Isabel Rivas), the woman who was instrumental in catapulting Larry to his present stature.

Back to present time, Thea married her suitor Berting who turned out to be a batterer. One day, Berting beat Thea so badly that she had to be rushed to the hospital because of an injury to her spleen. She needs to undergo a major treatment but she has no financial means to do so.

Meanwhile, Alex found out that a photo of him taken during the hostage taking incident was published in Romer's column. Infuriated, he stormed the columnist in his office. On his way out of the building, he saw Cindy as the latter was returning his motorcycle. He confronted Cindy for stealing his motorcycle. Alex left hugely disappointed and accidentally drops the tabloid he was holding. Cindy picks it up and reads about the man's misfortunes. She felt guilty for what she did and began to feel pity for him.

The "facts" and "bluffs" of "Celebrity Bluff"

Last Saturday, GMA launched its new game show Celebrity Bluff hosted by Eugene Domingo with Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola of the Jose and Wally comic duo.

In the said episode, Michelle O'Bombshell joined in the bluffing as guest. The celebrity contestants were Survivor Philippines Ultimate Survivor Albert "Betong" Sumaya, Jr., Julie Anne San Jose and Chariz Solomon.

Ultimately, Betong won the jackpot prize of P500,000 after completing three thrilling rounds and answering the jackpot question correctly.

As expected because of the innate wackiness of its hosts, the show turned out to be hilarious and naturally exciting. But more than the fun, the interesting questions that even the most well read viewers would have a hard time answering is probably the most valuable asset of the show.

Here are a few of the "facts" and "bluffs" featured in last Saturday's episode:

Q: Ayon sa latest survey ng Social Weather Station, pagdating sa pag-ibig, ano ang unang ginagamit ng mga Pilipino: utak o puso?

Michelle O'Bombshell thought Filipinos, being Asians, have the tendency to become emotional and thus, to follow their heart. Betong agreed with her and as it turned out, they are right.

According to a recent survey by the Social Weather Station, 54% of Filipinos used their heart when it comes to love and relationships, while 45% used their brain.

Celebrity contestant Julie Anne agreed with celebrity bluffer Wally when the latter said that there are 10 lanes in an Olympic size swimming pool. Is Wally's answer a fact or a bluff?

Actually, it's a fact. An Olympic size swimming pool has ten (10) lanes. How many of us would have gotten that right?

Q: Ayon sa poem na "A Visit from St. Nicholas," ilan ang reindeer ni Santa Claus?

Forget the first two questions, this one is tough. While we think we are all too familiar with anything related to Christmas, how many of us would have answered this question correctly?

When celebrity bluffer Michelle O'Bombshell answered seven, celebrity contestant Chariz Solomon was dubious for the right reasons. Although Michelle was able to confidently name a few of the reindeers mentioned in the poem, she (possibly deliberately) included names like "Pusher," "User," and "Composer" in the list making her answer more likely to be a bluff. Despite Chariz's apprehensions, she was swayed into believing that Michelle's answer (seven) is a fact. The correct answer is eight (8).

German Moreno, otherwise known as "Kuya Germs" in showbiz circles, is branded as the "Master Showman" of the local entertainment industry and in the past he has portrayed as a clown. Well, every Filipino knows that he's not an action star or a horror icon like THE Lilia Cuntapay and so this question should be a no-brainer to most of us.

The correct answer is "clown."

Q: Apat sa mga pelikulang ito ay batay sa aklat o nobela: Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag, Himala, Laro sa Baga, Dekada '70, Oro Plata Mata, Bata Bata Paano Ka Ginawa?

Now, this is the trickiest question in the episode. It better be since it is the 3rd Round question -- the one that decided whether Betong could move on to the Jackpot Round.

Amazingly, Betong figured out which four films were based on books/novels. These are "Bata, Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa?;" "Dekada '70;" "Maynila sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag;" and "Laro sa Baga." The first two were based on novels written by acclaimed Filipino author Lualhati Bautista and the next two were based on novels written by Edgardo M. Reyes.

Do you want to learn more interesting facts? Tune in this Saturday to another fun-filled episode of Celebrity Bluff, airing after 24 Oras Weekend on GMA-7.

"Celebrity Bluff" pilot wins against 'TV Patrol', 'Deal' in TV ratings

GMA's new game show, Celebrity Bluff, hosted by Eugene Domingo, Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola, aired its pilot episode last Saturday, November 17. The episode garnered 16.5% TV household ratings in viewer-rich Mega Manila besting its competing programs TV Patrol Weekend (12.7%) and Kapamilya Deal or No Deal (14.8%). This is according to data from the more trusted TV ratings provider Nielsen Television Audience Measurement.

Furthermore, based on the exact overlap ratings results, Celebrity Bluff got a household rating of 15.0% in Metro Manila against TV Patrol Weekend's 13.1%, and 17.8% against Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal's 13.5%.

Survivor Philippines grand winner Albert "Betong" Sumaya, Comedienne Chariz Solomon and Pop Singing Sensation Julie Anne San Jose were the celebrity contestants in Celebrity Bluff's pilot episode, while comedienne/impersonator Michelle O'Bombshell was the guest celebrity bluffer.

Celebrity Bluff consists of three levels starting with the "Utakan Round." In the said round, the three contestants draw lots to determine who among them will vie for the first question. The lucky contestant then chooses one celebrity bluffer to answer the question and then he/she will guess whether the celebrity bluffer's answer is a "Fact" or a "Bluff." If the contestant's answer is correct, he/she receives a corresponding cash prize. Otherwise, the cash prize will be divided between his/her competitors. The contestant with the least amount of accumulated cash prize leaves the game at the end of the round.

In the second round, the two remaining contestants are each given a mission or challenge. Whoever accomplishes his/her challenge within the pre-determined time period moves on to the final round. In the case of a tie, another challenge will be given to both contestants to break it. The contestant to complete the task first will move on to the next round.

In the third round, "Sagaran," the contestant is presented with a question and a set of possible answers. Among these options, four are correct. The contestant must be able to determine which ones are the correct answers. Otherwise, he/she will only take home whatever cash prize he/she has accumulated so far. If the contestant gets all four correct answers, he/she will have the chance to answer the jackpot question, which is worth P500,000.

Last Saturday was another lucky day for Betong as he went home with P500,000. Although his fellow contestants -- Chariz and Julie Anne -- were not as lucky, they didn't go home empty-handed. Chariz was eliminated during the first round, while Julie Anne still made it to the tie-breaker round after she and Betong both completed their respective missions/challenges within the allotted time in the second round.

The third round was a tough challenge for Betong. It was apparent the he was not sure with his answer but he pushed on anyway with what his instincts had told him. As it turned out, his instincts were right.

Don't miss the next exciting episode of Celebrity Bluff, airing this Saturday, November 24, after 24 Oras Weekend on GMA-7.

Marian Rivera on relationship with Dingdong Dantes: “God is in our midst”

GMA’s Primetime Queen Marian Rivera portrays the role of a pathetic, insecure housewife named Angeline in the primetime series “Temptation of Wife.” In real life though, she says she feels very much secure with her relationship with boyfriend Dingdong Dantes because ‘God is at its center.’

“As long as nasa gitna ng relationship niyo si God walang temptation talaga. Masasabi kong sa relationship namin nasa gitna si God kasi kung hindi, matagal na sigurong laglag yung relationship namin pero hindi e, the more na nagtatagal ang relationship namin mas lalo kaming tumitibay at lalo kaming nagiging masaya,” she shared.

Marian says that she is not affected by rumors that link Dingdong to other women both inside and outside of showbiz.

“Meron ba? Parang wala naman. Parte na ng pag-aartista yan e. For as long as kasama namin si God at kaming dalawa ay nagkakasundo at nagkakaintindihan, sa tingin ko walang magiging problema,” she added.

For her part, Marian says there is no reason for Dingdong not to feel the same way about her since she is not vulnerable to temptation.

“Ako kasi yung tipo ng babae na kapag may karelasyon ako ay doon lang talaga nakatuon ang atensiyon ko.  Hindi ko naman sinasabing hindi ako natetempt, nakaka-appreciate pa rin naman ako ng lalaki pero hindi naman ibig sabihin non ay lalandi ako,” the actress said.

Marian as ‘Angeline’

In “Temptation of Wife,” Marian’s laid back character is the exact opposite of that of her antagonist Glaiza de Castro who plays “Heidi,” Angeline’s covetous best friend.  Heidi secretly detests Angeline because she feels that fate has always favored Angeline over her and has given her the things -- and people -- that Heidi had always wanted. One of which is Angeline’s husband, Marcel.

Reflecting about her role in the series, Marian says it is way different from her role in her previous series “Amaya” and “My Beloved.”

“Mas malalim ito at saka mas mabigat. Although wala pa naman akong asawa, pero ito yung nakikita mo talagang sa totoong buhay na nangyayari na ang asawa ay may kabit tapos yung kabit pa yung mas matapang kaysa sa asawa,” she said.

In order to have some sort of bases for the internalization of their characters, the cast watched the original (Korean) version of “Temptation of Wife.”  Although the scenes are just as intense, Marian says the Philippine version is less violent but more emotional.

“Ang mas importante ay nabibigyan namin ng Pinoy version tayo na mas madamdamin, mas sensitive, mas may puso.  Feeling ko yun ang talagang maipaglalaki namin dito sa ‘Temptation of Wife,” she explained.

Asked whether she is fine with the scuffle and tussle required in her scenes with Glaiza, Marian says she has gotten used to having bruises all over her body from her shows.

“Sa lahat naman ng soap ko binubugbog ako.  Sanay na yung katawan ko (laughs),” she quipped.

In real life, Marian and Glaiza are very comfortable working together.  They became close when they worked together in “Amaya.”

“Temptation of Wife” airs weeknights after Aso ni San Roque on GMA-7.
